ABOUT US

‘Everything old is new again and vice versa’. That’s the essence of  MJ & The Progression.

We are Adelaide’s premiere ‘pop-jazz’ and ‘retro-refit’ ensemble bringing audiences fantastic arrangements of popular songs transformed into swing and contemporary jazz styles and jazz classics into modern musical styles.

Think Michael Jackson, AC-DC and the Doors with a swing or bossa-nova twist, Police songs re-interpreted as smoky ballads, and artists as diverse as Nick Cave and Donovan given the retro refit treatment.

For the last five years the band have been putting on shows for the Fringe, the Cabaret Festival and the Umbrella Festival with variations on this theme, covering jazzed-up classics from Leonard Cohen, Cream and Queen to versions of modern songs by Amy Winehouse, Meghan Trainor, Caro Emerald and Lorde; plus bringing older jazz tunes into the new age with re-interpretations of Bacharach, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Nina Simone.

With a three-piece brass section of Andrew Vince, David Fletcher and Steve Turner; and a solid rhythm section of Stephen Stone, David Bentley and Tom Stehlik who have been playing together for over 20 years, the band is led by the strong and sultry vocals of Mary-Jane (MJ) Hendry.

MJ & The Progression are the perfect choice to add something a little different, with a lot of style, to your next event!
